Circo en Montevideo

Abstract

Esta tesis es el resultado de una investigación sobre el circo contemporáneo en Montevideo. En la misma procuré abordar una temática del arte contemporáneo desde una perspectiva antropológica. Se trata del circo y su proceso de resurgimiento entre las artes escénicas del Uruguay desde finales de los años 90 del siglo pasado, seguido por un proceso de crecimiento y consolidación que llega hasta el presente. El circo cuenta con una larga historia entre las prácticas corporales del hombre y una rica historia local desde finales del siglo XIX hasta finales del siglo XX, siendo a su vez un objeto interesante para el trabajo etnográfico en sus manifestaciones contemporáneas a partir de este proceso de resurgimiento y su creciente visibilidad en los espacios urbanos capitalinos. Se trata de una investigación etnográfica realizada con un grupo de artistas implicados en este movimiento, atravesada por la experiencia de haber estado inserta en la dinámica que analizo -formando parte de un colectivo artístico- durante los últimos 15 años. Durante el trayecto intenté comprender cómo el circo es colocado nuevamente en la escena, qué continuidades y rupturas se establecen con formas anteriores, cómo se organizan los colectivos de artistas, qué significa ser artista de circo en el contexto montevideano, cómo se desarrolla la dinámica laboral, cómo se aprenden estas técnicas complejas y qué particularidades hay allí donde el cuerpo se expone en una escena donde el riesgo es constitutivo. La investigación pretende ser un aporte en dos sentidos: en el campo de las ciencias sociales y en el propio campo circense, a partir del análisis de un tema que aún no ha comenzado a ser investigado en nuestro contexto.

This thesis is the result of an investigation about the contemporary circus in Montevideo. Here I tried to approach a topic of contemporary art from an anthropologic perspective. It is about the circus and its revival process among the Uruguayan scenic arts since the last years of the 1990s followed by a process of growth and consolidation up to the present days. The circus counts with a vast history within human body practices and a rich local history from the end of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century and it is, at the same time, an interesting object for the ethnographic work in its contemporary manifestations from this revival process that counts with a growing exposure in urban spaces in the capital city. It is an ethnographic research carried out with a group of artists involved in this movement, permeated by the experience of having been part of the dynamics I analyze –taking part of a group of artists for the last 15 years. Along this journey I tried to understand how the circus is relocated in the scene, which continuities and ruptures are established with previous forms, how group of artists are organized, what it means to be a circus artist in the Montevidean context, how are the working dynamics developed, how these complex techniques are learnt and what peculiarities are there where the body is exposed in a scenery that has risk as a constitutional part. The research attempts to provide in two senses: in the area of social studies and in the own area of the circus, starting from analyzing a topic that has not begun to be investigated in our context yet.
