Abstract: This article explores the growing phenomenon of the spread of the Afro-American cults in Uruguay and the possible correlation with poverty. For those purposes, mixed research methods are used. Aspects such as the socioeconomic and educational situation of the followers of Afro-religions are approached quantitatively. On the other hand, the characteristics of the religious message, which causes this type of cult to have increasingly more followers in our country, are approached qualitatively.
