Valoraciones discursivas del Movimiento de Liberación Nacional-Tupamaros en la prensa uruguaya del período 1966-1972

Abstract

Esta investigación se enmarca en los estudios del discurso y contribuye a la comprensión de uno de los procesos socio- históricos que suelen mencionarse como justificación del golpe de Estado en Uruguay (1973): las acciones públicas de la guerrilla urbana Movimiento de Liberación Nacional- Tupamaros (MLN-T) durante el período 1966-1972. En este marco, el objetivo de esta tesis fue analizar las valoraciones discursivas de las acciones públicas y de los actores de la guerrilla urbana MLN-T en tres periódicos uruguayos: El Día, El País y El Popular. De esta forma, se analizaron las actitudes que los periódicos manifiestan, se indagaron los recursos lingüísticos que permiten graduar las valoraciones y se exploró la presencia de diferentes voces o puntos de vista en las noticias del período mencionado. El corpus consta de dieciocho noticias sobre seis acciones públicas llevadas a cabo por el MLN-T con diverso grado de violencia: por un lado, robos y por el otro, asesinatos.

Los datos fueron analizados cualitativamente empleando el marco teórico- metodológico de la lingüística sistémico- funcional, con aportes del análisis del

discurso de medios y de la perspectiva discursiva socio- histórica. El lenguaje de los periódicos fue estudiado de acuerdo a los tres subsistemas de VALORACIÓN: ACTITUD, COMPROMISO y GRADACIÓN. Estas perspectivas integradas permitieron visibilizar los cuerpos de creencias ideológicas y comprender la construcción de los significados intersubjetivos esbozados en los textos. Los resultados de este estudio aportan evidencia lingüística a las afirmaciones planteadas desde la historiografía acerca de la construcción de un enemigo interno a través de la prensa. Esta tesis constató así la tendencia de periódicos con diversos posicionamientos ideológicos a construir diferentes representaciones discursivas del MLN-T y sus acciones. Mientras que el periódico de izquierda se mostró cauto y se abstuvo de formular evaluaciones, los periódicos de centro izquierda y centro derecha asumieron posturas más sensacionalistas y más radicales en sus juicios.

This research is framed in discourse studies and it contributes to the understanding of one of the sociohistorical processes that are often mentioned as a justification for the coup d'état in Uruguay (1973): the public actions of the Tupamaro National Liberation Movement (MLN-T) urban guerrilla during the period 1966-1972. In this framework, the objective of this thesis was to analyse the discursive evaluations of the public actions and the actors of the MLN-T urban guerrilla in three Uruguayan newspapers: El Día, El País and El Popular. The aim was to analyse the attitudes that the newspapers express, to investigate the linguistic resources that allow grading evaluations and to explore the presence of different voices or points of view in the news of the aforementioned period. The corpus consisted of eighteen news items that report six public actions carried out by the MLN-T which have varying degrees of violence: on the one hand, robberies and on the other, murders. Data was analysed qualitatively using the theoretical and methodological framework of systemic functional linguistics, with contributions from media discourse analysis and the sociohistorical approach to discourse studies. The language of the newspapers was studied according to the three subsystems of Appraisal: ATTITUDE, ENGAGEMENT and GRADATION. The integration of these perspectives shed light on the bodies of ideological beliefs and helped to understand the construction of the intersubjective meanings outlined in the texts. The results of this study provide linguistic evidence to the claims raised from the field of historiography regarding the construction of an internal enemy through the press. This thesis thus confirmed the tendency of newspapers with diverse ideological stances to construct different discursive representations of the MLN-T and its actions. While the left-wing newspaper was cautious and refrained from making evaluations, the centre-left and centre-right newspapers took more sensationalist and more radical positions.
