La Generación de 1837 en Adolfo Saldías: una recuperación de los románticos rioplatenses en el cambio del siglo XIX al XX

Abstract

El trabajo analiza la forma en que, entre fines del siglo XIX e inicios del XX, el historiador y político argentino Adolfo Saldías reivindicó a tres de las principales figuras de la llamada Generación de 1837: Esteban Echeverría, Juan B. Alberdi y Domingo F. Sarmiento. Conocido en la historiografía por sus estudios sobre el régimen de Juan Manuel de Rosas, atender su recuperación de los románticos rioplatenses ofrece una faceta novedosa de su trayectoria, a su vez, signada por la dimensión generacional. Desde la historia intelectual, y a partir del abordaje de escritos históricos y periodísticos, de discursos y la correspondencia privada del autor, se sostiene que con esa reivindicación Saldías pretendió ubicarse en su estela,como un pensador a contramano de su tiempo, pero sin dejar de confluir con las principales tendencias de la Argentina liberal.

This paper analyses the way in which, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Argentine historian and politician Adolfo Saldías vindicated three of the mainfigures of the so-called Generation of 1837: Esteban Echeverría, Juan B. Alberdi and Domingo F. Sarmiento. Known in historiography for his studies on the regime of Juan Manuel de Rosas, his recovery of the Rio de la Plata Romantics offers a new perspective of his career, in turn, marked by the generational dimension. From the point of view of intellectual history, and from the approach of historical and journalistic writings, speeches, and the author's private correspondence, it is argued that with this vindication Saldías intended to place himself in their wake as a thinker against the grain of his time, but without ceasing to converge with the main trends of liberal Argentina.
