Batlle, el batllismo y el fútbol

Abstract

En este trabajo se intenta rastrear, a partir de la figura del mayor líder político de la primera mitad de siglo XX, José Batlle y Ordóñez, el origen de la organización estatal de la Cultura Física en Uruguay y su inicial desarrollo hasta la organización de la I Copa América realizada en Montevideo en 1917. Se transita desde su infancia, pasando por su primer viaje a Paris y su predilección por las carreras a pie, hasta la conformación de un club de gimnasia, esgrima y tiro a su regreso y su proyecto de torneos atléticos con premios en dinero. Se refiere seguidamente a la conformación de la Comisión Nacional de Educación Física y los proyectos de su presidente, la construcción del primer Field Oficial en el Gran Parque Central y la realización de la 1ª Copa América. Finalmente se intentan extraer algunas consecuencias para la cultura deportiva y la organización posterior del deporte uruguayo.

In this work we try to trace, from the figure of the greatest political leader of the first half of the 20th century, JoséBatlle y Ordóñez, the origin of the state organization of Physical Culture in Uruguay and its initial development, until the organization of the I America Cup held in Montevideo in 1917. It transitsfrom his childhood, going through his first trip to Paris and his predilection for running races, to the formation of a gymnastics club, fencing and shooting on his return and his tournament project athletic with prizes in money. It refers to the formation of the National Commission of Physical Education and the projects of its president, the construction of the first Official Field in the Great Central Park and the realization of the 1st America Cup. Finally, they try to extract some consequences that it had for the sport culture and the later organization of the sport.
