Cuando los siglos cumplen cien años… Cantos, celebraciones y honras fúnebres vinculadas a Artigas : 1950, 1977 y 2011

Abstract

El objeto de estudio de esta tesis lo constituyen tres conmemoraciones (bi)centenarias en honor a José Gervasio Artigas, en las que se combinó la celebración festiva, con la solemnidad propia del duelo, y los rituales correspondientes, en distintos momentos de la historia del país: 1950, 1977 y 2011. Se partió de un Prócer ya construido, para mostrar la interacción de distintos mecanismos –particulares, institucionales, legales- que fueron conformando diversas tradiciones presentes hoy en la comunidad imaginada uruguaya. Las mismas siguieron (siguen) afianzando la figura de Artigas en la comunidad imaginada uruguaya, en una trama “espesa” que hace convivir al “héroe máximo” con “un héroe de carne y hueso”, sin resolver tal tensión, y que ponen en primer plano temáticas como la memoria y la identidad nacional.

The object of study of this dissertation is built by three bi(centenary) commemorations that honor José Gervasio Artigas, where festive celebration, the solemnity of mourning, and the corresponding rituals, were combined in different historical moments in the country: 1950, 1977 and 2011. It started with an already established hero, to show the interaction of different mechanisms –private, institucional, legal– that began building diverse traditions which are present in the imagined uruguayan community today. The same continued (continues) securing the figure of Artigas in the imagined uruguayan community, in a “thick” plot that makes “the ultimate hero” and “the flesh and bone hero” coexist, without solving the tension, and putting in the foreground topics such as the national memory and identity.
