Procesos emocionales de mujeres jóvenes durante la pandemia por Covid-19 en Montevideo (Uruguay) y Córdoba (Argentina)

Abstract

El enfoque teórico y la revisión de antecedentes, indican que los sistemas de sexo-género asignan a las mujeres posiciones especialmente demandantes en el contexto latinoamericano, marcado por la precarización laboral, la familiarización de los cuidados y la coexistencia de mandatos tradicionales e innovadores en torno al género. Las medidas implementadas durante la emergencia sanitaria profundizaron las desigualdades estructurales, el individualismo y la sobrecarga global de trabajo. La salud mental continuó siendo abordada como una problemática individual y despolitizada, al mismo tiempo que el sistema de salud dio respuestas fragmentadas y enfocadas en la dimensión física de las personas. En este estudio, se adoptó una metodología cualitativa basada en entrevistas en profundidad a mujeres jóvenes con y sin personas a su cuidado en ambas ciudades, priorizando la comprensión de los sentidos y significados que ellas le otorgan a sus procesos emocionales y a las transformaciones que atravesaron durante el período de estudio. Los principales hallazgos muestran que las dinámicas de cuidado, la sobreexigencia laboral y el debilitamiento de las redes de apoyo fueron dimensiones centrales en los procesos de malestar. Estas se vinculan con sentimientos de soledad, agotamiento y miedo. Sin embargo, también emergieron experiencias de bienestar asociadas a la desaceleración del ritmo de vida y a la posibilidad de reflexión sobre los vínculos, los proyectos personales y los modos de habitar el tiempo. En conjunto, los resultados revelan cómo las mujeres resignificaron su malestar en términos sociales y políticos, contribuyendo a disputar los límites entre lo personal y lo colectivo.

This research analyzes the emotional experiences of young women from Montevideo (Uruguay) and Córdoba (Argentina) during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of understanding how capitalism, patriarchy, and normativism intersect in shaping their processes of well-being and distress. From a feminist epistemological perspective, it seeks to produce situated knowledge about the lives of young women, recognizing the connections between gender, mental health, and social structures, as well as the possibilities for politicizing these processes. The theoretical framework and literature review suggest that sex-gender systems assign women particularly demanding positions within the Latin American context, marked by labor precarization, the familiarization of care, and the coexistence of both traditional and innovative gender mandates. The measures implemented during the health emergency deepened structural inequalities, individualism, and the care and work burden. Mental health continued to be addressed as an individual and depoliticized issue, while the healthcare system provided fragmented responses mainly focused on physical well-being. This study adopts a qualitative methodology based on in-depth interviews with young women, both with and without caregiving responsibilities, in both cities. The analysis prioritizes the understanding of the meanings they attribute to their emotional processes and to the transformations they experienced during the period under study. The main findings show that caregiving dynamics, labor over-demand, and the weakening of support networks were central dimensions in the production of distress. These were linked to feelings of loneliness, exhaustion, and fear. However, experiences of well-being also emerged, associated with the slowing down of life’s pace and the possibility of reflecting on relationships, personal projects, and ways of inhabiting time. Overall, the results reveal how women re-signified their distress in social and political terms, contributing to challenging the boundaries between the personal and the collective.
