Aplicación de la inteligencia artificial en el campo de la salud: revisión bibliográfica

Abstract

Introducción: La inteligencia artificial (IA) se ha vuelto parte de nuestra vida cotidiana. Interactuamos con y entrenamos sistemas de IA sin siquiera notarlo. En los últimos años, la investigación y desarrollo de sistemas de IA se ha disparado. El campo de la medicina no es ajeno a estos avances, existiendo desarrollos prometedores que podrían mejorar la calidad de atención, diagnóstico, prevención de enfermedades y manejo de información hospitalaria y epidemiológica. El desarrollo de la IA, trae consigo desafíos éticos a los que la humanidad no se había enfrentado anteriormente, existiendo incertidumbre sobre la confiabilidad, responsabilidad y aplicabilidad de los sistemas de IA. Objetivos: Realizar una revisión bibliográfica para conocer la evolución histórica de las publicaciones sobre el uso de la IA en el campo de la salud, identificar las áreas de mayor aplicación, discutir sobre los posibles conflictos éticos y visualizar los avances del tema en nuestro país. Resultados: La publicación médica científica ha experimentado un aumento progresivo en las últimas décadas. La publicación de artículos incluyendo palabras clave como ―artificial intelligence‖ acompaña también esta tendencia incremental sostenida, representando el 0,33% del total de publicaciones hasta la fecha. El primer artículo tratando sobre IA aplicada al campo de la salud data de 1952, bajo el nombre: ―The robot anaesthetist; an introduction to the automatic control of anaesthesia by means of an electro-encephalographic intermediary. El aumento más notorio de publicaciones sobre IA se observó en el último milenio, manteniéndose esta tendencia hasta la actualidad. Conclusiones: la IA aplicada a la salud parece abrir nuevos caminos de conocimiento, existiendo gran potencial aún por explorar. El futuro parece ser prometedor, tendiendo a la automatización de los sistemas diagnósticos y clínicos. Esto trae consigo el desafío de lograr establecer los límites máquina-humano, para que la atención de la salud mantenga su esencia humanista, sin dejar afuera los avances tecnológicos.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of our daily lives. We interact with and train IA systems without even noticing. In recent years, research and development of AI has strongly increased. The medical field is no stranger to these progress, there are promising developments that could improve the quality of care, diagnosis, disease prevention and management of hospital and epidemiological information. The development of AI brings ethical challenges that humanity had not faced before, there is uncertainty about the reliability, responsibility and applicability of AI systems. Objectives: to observe the evolution of the publication of AI in the medical field, to analize in which areas it has the greatest number of publications, to discuss possible ethical conflicts; and finally, visualize the progress of the topic in our country. Results: medical research has experienced a significant increase in publications. The publication of articles that included the keywords ―artificial intelligence‖ accompanies this trend of sustained increase, being part of 0.33% of the publications. The first medical article that includes the aforementioned keywords, dates from 1952, under the name: ―The anaesthetist robot; an introduction to the automatic control of anaesthesia by means of an electro-encephalographic intermediary.The significant increase in AI publication was observed in the last millennium, maintaining an upward trend to the present. Conclusions: AI applied to medicine seems to be a new pathway yet to explore, with great potential still not fully known. The future seems promising, tending towards the automation of diagnostic and clinical systems. This brings as a challenge to establish the human-machine limits, so that health care maintains its humanistic essence, without leaving out technological advances.
