Identidad, maternidad y trabajo. Un estudio entre clases sociales en Chile

Abstract

El aumento de la participación femenina en el empleo asalariado ha enfrentado a las mujeres al conflicto familia-trabajo. En un contexto de transformación del ejercicio de la maternidad y de pérdida de fuerza del trabajo como fuente de identidad colectiva, nos preguntamos por la construcción de identidades femeninas. Este artículo, mediante un estudio cualitativo basado en la realización de entrevistas y grupos de discusión, centrado en mujeres madres y trabajadoras de distintos sectores sociales en Chile, muestra cómo la esfera productiva está entrelazada con la reproductiva. Al mismo tiempo, profundiza en cómo los mandatos de maternidad y trabajo son significados y resueltos de formas distintas por mujeres de clase media y de clase trabajadora.

The increase in female participation in wage employment has confronted women to the conflict between family and work. In a context of transformation of the exercise of motherhood and the loss of strength of work as a source of collective identity, we ask ourselves about the construction of feminine identities by social group with respect to both dimensions. This article, through a qualitative study based on interviews and discussion groups of working women of different social groups in Chile, the study shows how the productive sphere is intertwined with the reproductive sphere, and how being a working mother, and its tensions, are indissoluble elements of their identities. At the same time, maternity and work mandates are solved in different ways according to social group.
