Abstract: The Automatic Identification System (AIS) was developed primarily to enhance maritime safety. While large ships are mandated to equip AIS stations, the situation differs for smaller vessels, particularly recreational ones, as AIS technology is not obligatory. Additionally, the cost of AIS stations poses a significant barrier for owners of fishing vessels or boats. This study outlines the creation of a low-cost AIS transceiver station using Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. The prototype has been meticulously designed, implemented, and evaluated to showcase its viability. As a tangible outcome, an out-of-tree GNU Radio module has been developed, with its code readily accessible online.
