The importance of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly due to the possibility of long-distance airborne contagion. Consequently, assessment of ventilation rates and estimation of contagion risk has become a matter of the utmost importance. This project focuses on the assessment of IAQ at a public school building in Montevideo (Uruguay) with natural ventilation, based on a measurement campaign conducted between July and December of 2021. Both Particulate Matter (PM) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations were measured inside a classroom and outside the school, as well as some meteorological variables. Furthermore, ventilation rates and long-distance contagion risk were assessed through the use of fully-mixed box models and CO2 measurements. In particular, Wells-Riley models were used for risk assessment. Additionally, the interaction between occupants’ thermal comfort and ventilation rates was explored by implementing a BEM (Building Energy Modeling) model in EnergyPlus, and a central HVAC system was proposed in order to improve thermal comfort and IAQ during the heating season.
