Autor: Bacquerié, Camila; Larnaudie, Valeria; Ferrari, Mario Daniel; Lareo, Claudia
Resumen: Rice husk is an abundant lignocellulosic residue with significant potential for valorization
within the framework of a biorefinery. It contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, as well
as a high ash content mainly composed of SiO₂, which can be transformed into biofuels and
value-added products. The development of integrated processes for its utilization can
contribute to waste reduction and sustainable energy production.
In this work, a rice husk biorefinery was modeled to produce bioethanol and co-products
such as silica, lignin, furfural and sodium sulfate. The process includes two main steps:
autohydrolysis to recover hemicellulose-derived compounds, and alkaline treatment with
NaOH to remove lignin and ash. The remaining cellulose-rich solid is then converted into
ethanol through enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. The process also includes product
recovery, utilities and wastewater treatment.
The process was simulated in Aspen Plus® using the NRTL property method. The model
integrates experimental data and literature sources, considering a plant capacity of 16 t/h of
dry rice husk. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed to estimate the minimum
selling price of ethanol (MESP), defined as the price that results in a net present value (NPV)
equal to zero, assuming constant revenues from co-products.
The results show that operating costs, estimated at approximately 52 million USD per year,
are dominated by raw materials, particularly NaOH and H₂SO₄, as well as utilities
consumption. Capital investment is reaching an estimated total of 300 million USD. Silica and
ethanol represent the main sources of revenue. The calculated MESP was 1.53 USD/L,
indicating that economic viability remains challenging under the evaluated conditions.
Nevertheless, the analysis allowed the identification of improvement scenarios and key
process bottlenecks, highlighting opportunities for further experimental work and process
optimization.

Autor: Barcos, Mathías; Lareo, Claudia; Rochón, Eloísa
Resumen: Lignocellulosic hydrolysates typically contain inhibitors that limit microbial fermentation. Based on the characterization of rice husk autohydrolysis liquor, this study assessed the individual and combined effects of the main inhibitors identified—acetic acid, formic acid and furfural—on succinic acid fermentation. Batch experiments were performed using a defined synthetic medium containing glucose and xylose as the carbon sources. A control fermentation (without inhibitors addition) was compared against media
supplemented with each inhibitor separately and with the three inhibitors simultaneously, at concentrations representative of those found in the liquor. In addition, a fermentation using rice husk autohydrolysis liquor as the carbon source was performed. Results showed that acetic acid (~3.0–3.3 g/L) suppressed succinic acid fermentation in synthetic medium. However, when the hemicellulosic hydrolysate was evaluated, A. succinogenes DSM 22257 was capable of fermenting after a detoxification step resulting in ~8–9 g/L succinic acid.

Título: Optimization of enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of rice husk for lactic acid production
Autor: Liguori, Alberto; Ferrari, Mario Daniel; Lareo, Claudia
Resumen: Lactic acid is an industrially important compound due to its versatility in the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical sectors. This study addresses the valorization of rice husk through an integrated process involving sequential autohydrolyzed and alkaline pretreatment, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis and lactic acid fermentation. The effects of solids loading, enzyme dosage, and pH were evaluated using a Box–Behnken experimental design, achieving glucose concentrations of up to 130 g/L. Considering
the inhibitory effects observed at high sugar concentrations during fermentation, the hydrolysate was diluted to 40 g/L glucose for subsequent processing. The resulting hydrolysate was fermented by Heyndrickxia coagulans DSM 2314 under anaerobic conditions at 50 °C and pH 7.0, reaching a lactic acid concentration of 30.8 g/L after 24 h. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the process for producing high concentrations of fermentable sugars and their rapid conversion into lactic acid, highlighting its potential for the scalable valorization of lignocellulosic residues.
