Introducción: La formación de médicos en Uruguay brindada por la Facultad de Medicina está basada en la enseñanza integral de conocimientos en salud, abordando diferentes temáticas de las principales disciplinas del
área. Al concluir la formación de grado los egresados tienen la opción de especializarse en áreas específicas, relacionadas con la prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento de enfermedades.
Este estudio exploró las preferencias de los estudiantes de diferentes ciclos de la carrera de Doctor en Medicina de la Universidad de la República, (cursando en 2024) sobre su futura especialidad, analizando los factores
asociados a dichas elecciones.
Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal, donde se incluyó estudiantes desde primer año hasta el Ciclo de Internado Rotatorio. Los datos fueron recolectados mediante formulario web. Los datos obtenidos fueron
procesados, y analizados con el programa estadístico JASP. Las variables fueron descritas mediante frecuencias absolutas y porcentajes.
Resultados: Se obtuvo una muestra de 1816, con una cobertura del 21% de la población. Predominó el sexo femenino y la mayoría reside en Montevideo.
Las especialidades preferidas fueron Pediatría, Ginecotocología, Cirugía General, Dermatología y Anestesiología. Las categorías de especialidades se agruparon en: médicas (53,1%), quirúrgicas (42,8%), salud pública (3,1%) y laboratorio (1,0%). Los factores vinculados a la elección fueron la vocación y el conocimiento.
Conclusión: La mayoría de los estudiantes prefieren especialidades médicas. Los factores condicionantes en su decisión fueron la vocación y adquisición de mayor conocimiento.
Introduction: medical training in Uruguay, provided by the University of Medicine at the University of the Republic (UDELAR), is based on an integral approach to health education, covering various topics within the main disciplines of the field. Upon completing their undergraduate studies, graduates have the option to specialize in specific areas related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. This study explored the preferences of students at different stages of the Doctor of Medicine career at UDELAR regarding their future specialties and analyzing the factors influencing these choices. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted, including students from the first year of medical career up to the Rotational Internship Cycle. Data were collected via an online, processed, and analyzed using the statistical software JASP. Variables were described using absolute frequencies and percentages. Results: the survey achieved a response rate of 21%, with 1,816 valid responses. Female respondents predominated, and the majority resided in Montevideo. The most preferred specialties were Pediatrics, Gynecology, General Surgery, Dermatology, and Anesthesiology. Specialty categories were grouped as follows: medical (53.1%), surgical (42.8%), public health (3.1%), and laboratory (1.0%). The main factors influencing the choice of specialty were vocation and the desire for knowledge. Conclusion: most students expressed a preference for medical specialties. The factors most influencing their decisions were vocation and the aspiration to acquire greater knowledge.
