The present article aims to investigate the production and circulation of a cluster of images —and their symbolic functions— within a particular nationalist current that went from the Unión Nacionalista de Estudiantes Secundarios (UNES) to the Movimiento Nacionalista Tacuara (MNT) and its offshoots, passing through the Alianza Libertadora Nacionalista (ALN), among others. Far from adopting an immutable perspective on this process, we will seek to account for the persistency and changes in the meanings assigned to symbolically nodal images for this current, following the ideological cleavages of the organizations in question: the Maltese cross, the tacuara spear and the gaucho, eagles and condors, the figure of Juan Manuel de Rosas, and the federal star. We understand that through their use in street graffiti, banners, poetry, and chants, among other forms, these groups sought to contest the meaning of the national imaginaries, symbolisms, and representations of the Argentine State’s official liturgy and they achieved sufficient strength to do so, at least for a period of time.
