Introduction: Addressing hospital readmissions is essential to improve medical care and the distribution of health resources. In 2023, a group of medical students conducted research on hospital readmissions and associated risk factors; They observed that 25% of admitted patients correspond to readmissions, and 40% of readmissions are early, less than 30 days after hospital discharge. Objective: To evaluate the evolution of the cohort of patients who were admitted to the Hospital Maciel in 2023 one year after their last admission. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional observational study that addressed hospital readmissions in Clinica Medica 1 and the Pulmonology sector of the Hospital Maciel. A unique cohort of 160 patients admitted in the period July to September 2023 was analyzed. Group A (n=80) corresponded to patients who were admitted in said period and had no previous readmissions. Group B (n=80) corresponded to patients who were admitted but also had at least one readmission in the 6 months prior to said period. This cohort was analyzed the year following their last admission in the period July-September 2023. Results: Among the 160 patients, 57 died. Group B showed higher mortality (46%) (p=0.019) and a risk of mortality 2.2 (95% CI 1.135-4.311) times higher compared to group A. In group A, 15.18% of patients were readmitted, while in group B 43.42%. Regarding the use of health resources, group B required more studies. Conclusion: Patients who had readmissions in the previous period had higher mortality, frequency of readmissions and greater need for the use of health resources.
