The production of Uruguayan films increased several times over after 2000; if we consider the feature films produced in the 90s, we can verify a phenomenon that some authors have described as the national cinema boom, and even others, as the beginning of the Uruguayan New Cinema. This thesis explores the design and construction of Uruguayan characters in national fictional cinematography between 2000 and 2015, examining the characterization of ourselves in the national identity play, how we see ourselves, reflect and perceive ourselves as a society. The strategies presented as those responsible for contributing to the design and characterization of cinematographic characters, enable their deconstruction and systematization. The main attributes of the protagonists that constitute their way of seeing themselves, living, feeling and being, are analyzed, identified, and measured. Patterns are found in their design and composition, which provide us with a local glance at how current national cinema characterizes us as Uruguayans, aspects pertaining to its sociodemographic dimension and certain identity traits historically rooted in the popular imagination that try to define our Uruguayan nature.
