Introduction: Neonatal sepsis is a dysregulated systemic response of the body to a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. One of its most serious complications is septic shock, otherwise known as sepsis with cardiovascular dysfunction. This pathology is associated with high morbimortality, where early diagnosis and timely treatment play a fundamental role. Therefore, it is crucial to have optimized treatment protocols and accurate reports from the treating physician. Objective: To evaluate the recognition and prompt management of septic shock in neonates. Methodology: A retrospective, observational, and descriptive study of the medical records of neonates diagnosed with septic shock (from between 2019 and 2023) was carried out at Pereira Rossell Hospital. Results: a total of 33 patients were included, mostly preterm and with low birth weight. A statistically significant relationship was found between gestational age and shock recognition: the lower the gestational age, the later the recognition of the pathology. Furthermore, a relationship between the time of shock recognition and mortality was observed, emphasizing time’s value for this pathology. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of early recognition and timely management of septic shock in newborns, especially for those preterm with low birth weight, as well as the need to improve medical records.
