Objective: to analyze recent literature regarding stellate ganglion block (SGB) in patients presenting chronic angina and refractory electrical storm (ES), in order to evaluate its technique, effectiveness and complications. Methods: a total of 41 articles were analyzed, published from 2000 onwards in Spanish and English using PubMed, Timbó, SCielo, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library databases. SGB technique was studied in 31 articles. Landmark-based, ultrasound-based and fluoroscopic were the elected approaches. Ultrasound-guided SGB was the most popular approach. Unilateral (left) SGB was elected in 13 studies. The most frequently used neuromodulation technique was pharmacological. Results: SGB effectiveness in context of refractory ES and chronic angina was evaluated in 21 and 9 articles, respectively. In refractory ES, multiple studies identified a significant reduction in arrhythmic episodes post-SGB. Regarding chronic angina, SGB was identified as a possible therapeutic tool, existing nonetheless variability in its therapeutic success. The most frequently reported complications were: transient Horner’s syndrome, voice hoarseness and hematoma. The most severe ones were death, airway obstruction and quadriplegia. Conclusions: SGB is gaining a predominant role in the treatment of medically refractory ES and chronic angina. It isshown as an efficacious tool in refractory ES, allows patient stability enabling posterior definitive therapies. Furthermore, SGB temporarily reduces the number of angina episodes when chronic, achieving pain control from hours to weeks. Further randomized clinical trials are required to therefore determine optimal SGB technique and its precise indications.
