Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are the most widely prescribed psychopharmaceuticals worldwide, mainly as anxiolytics and hypnotics. In recent years, a high consumption and prescription of BZDs has been observed in our population, according to national data. Its adverse effects are mainly at the level of the central nervous system, in an acute and chronic use. In the Older Adult (MA) they are considered potentially inappropriate drugs (MPI) because they increase morbidity-mortality and hospital admissions (risk of falls, fractures, cognitive impairment, among others) resulting in a high cost in health. Furthermore, the metabolism of these drugs is altered by processes of ageing, polypharmacy and the specific pathologies of each patient. Objective: To develop a diagnosis of the situation of BZD use in AM users of the Metropolitan Primary Care Network (RAP) of the State Health Services Administration (ASSE) during 2019 and to compare it with previous data. Methodology: A retrospective, cross-sectional study of the use of BZD in AM users of the Metropolitan RAP of the State Health Services Administration (ASSE) during 2019 was carried out in order to establish a diagnosis of the situation and compare it with previous national and international data. Data on the dispensing of BZD to older adults between 1 January and 31 December 2019 was extracted from the Sistema de Gestión Asistencial (SGA), the drug management programme of the Metropolitan RAP. Utilization was measured through the calculation of the Inhabiting Dose Day (DHD), as a parameter of population exposure to benzodiazepines.
