This systematic review aimed to analyze contemporary evidence regarding the effects of perinatal depression—examined separately as prenatal and postnatal depression—on early infant temperament development. Eighteen longitudinal empirical studies were selected, including mother–infant dyads in which mothers were aged 18 years or older and at least one measure of depression and two measures of temperament were administered. Overall, the reviewed studies support a consistent association between perinatal depression and infant temperament. Specifically, infants of mothers experiencing perinatal depression showed higher levels of negative affectivity and reactivity, as well as lower levels of regulatory capacity. Additionally, a notable lack of research on this topic was identified in Uruguay and the broader regional context.
