For almost 10 years cruise tourism in Uruguay has been growing, determining an important contribution of foreign currency each season (April to October of each year) for that it is necessary to be able to characterize the economic variables involved in this activity, in particular, the expenditure in its different areas. In this working paper the author compare the typology that arose from applying methods of hierarchical and non-hierarchical clusters, with which it arises when applying network analysis (SNA) to data on cruise spending. Based on data from the 2010-2011 seasons, from the Ministerio de Turismo y Deportes (Ministry of Tourism and Sports), to data coming from a sample of passengers through a face-to-face survey with a complex sampling design. The authors had already constructed a typology of cruise passengers applying Ward’s algorithm over distances for binary variables (spend or not spend) in 5 items. To evaluate performance of social network analysis, 4 cruises are selected with probability proportional to size on which, based on binary expenditures, graphs are constructed and on which the different metrics are applied to describe them. The association of the socio-demographic characteristics of the cruise passengers with the previous typology of expenditures and the communities identified with the SNA is studied to identify patterns with the different type of cruises.
