This study aims to understand how firms adjust their workforce in response to unexpected separations in a con text of frictional labor markets. Using Social Security data from Uruguay from 1997 to 2022, this research exploits unexpected worker deaths to estimate causal effects. The empirical strategy relies on an event study analysis where controls are selected through Propensity Score Matching. Results are consistent with frictional labor markets, where adjustments are made on the extensive (hiring) and intensive (incumbent) margins. Het erogeneous results are found according to the position of the deceased, in line with human capital literature. Several robustness specifications are performed, confirming the results
