Este artículo examina las relaciones suscitadas entre la educación rural uruguaya y la estructura económica en el período comprendido desde los inicios del primer sistema público de enseñanza vareliano (1877), hasta la desaparición del órgano rector del gobierno de la instrucción pública (Dirección General de Instrucción Pública en 1918). Se pretende identificar y describir los propósitos de la educación rural, así como establecer la gravitación que tuvieron los fines orientados al desarrollo económico, a diferencia de los objetivos de la educación pública urbana, más diversificada y menos específica. Las fuentes relevadas mayoritariamente proceden del campo institucional educativo y político. Respecto a la metodología utilizada corresponde al
tradicional análisis heurístico documental histórico. El estudio confirma a modo de conclusión, el impacto que los aspectos económicos tuvieron en el desarrollo de la educación pública rural.
This paper examines the relations arising between Uruguayan rural education and the economic structure in the period since the beginning of Varela’s first public school system (1877), until the disappearance of the governing body of the public education directorate (General Direction of Public Instruction in 1918). It aims to identify and describe the purposes of rural education, as well as establish the gravitation of the purposes aimed at the economic development, unlike the goals of urban public education, more diversified and less specific. The surveyed sources mostly come from the educational and political institutional field. Regarding the applied methodology, it corresponds to the traditional heuristic documentary historical analysis. The study confirms by way of conclusion, the impact that the economic aspects had in the development of public rural education.
