Introduction: Smoking is one of the world's major health problems and the leading cause of preventable death according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Smoking is a risk factor for the development of major chronic diseases for smokers and for those exposed to the smoke. Among Uruguayan doctors the prevalence in 2011 was 9.8% (1). Objectives: The general objective of the study was to describe the smoking population within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff of Hospital Maciel. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out among the physicians, nursing assistants and graduate nurses of the ICU of Hospital Maciel in 2024. Participants completed a voluntary, anonymous, and electronic survey. Prior informed consent was achieved to analyze data recollected. The necessary variables for the analysis of this population were included. Results: The prevalence of smoking was 37.3%, with the majority of smokers being nursing assistants. Over half of the smokers engaged in tobacco use during their work hours. Over half of the participants exhibited a Pack Year Index of less than 10, while only one of the 24 participants (considering current and former smokers) demonstrated an elevated risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Discussion, conclusions and perspectives: The study demonstrated a markedly elevated prevalence of smoking among health personnel in comparison to that population in Uruguay. Over half of the participants reported smoking during working hours and indicated a tendency to increase their consumption in situations of work-related stress, a finding that aligns with reports from other studies. The majority of participants attempted to quit without professional assistance, underscoring a potential opportunity to promote smoking cessation programmes within the centre.
