This research aims to explore the existing relationship between economic growth and air pollution and air quality (CO2 and SO2 , respectively) in Uruguay (characterized as a small, open economy) throughout the XXth century. Based on the theory behind the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), the existence of a linear relation between the economic growth and the polluting agents for the 1955 - 2000 period was verified through a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). But while the atmospheric contamination emissions level grows jointly with product throughout the same period, air quality pollutant indicator emissions behave in the reverse way. Neither in the short term nor in the long term.
