En la actualidad el cáncer es una patología de gran relevancia a nivel mundial, ubicándose dentro de las principales causas de morbi-mortalidad según la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Con el avance de la biología molecular, la profundización en los mecanismos subyacentes a la carcinogénesis, y el rol del sistema inmune en este proceso, impulsados por alcanzar la cura definitiva contra el cáncer, o al menos reducir los efectos secundarios de los tratamientos clásicos como son las quimioterapias y radioterapias (pero sin excluir su uso), las investigaciones han puesto su centro en las inmunoterapias. Basándose en la capacidad del sistema inmune de erradicar las células neoplásicas (conocida como inmunovigilancia) y conociendo los mecanismos a través de los cuales las neoplasias logran inhibir o evadir estas acciones, las inmunoterapias buscan modular estos mecanismos a distintos niveles, para generar una respuesta antitumoral más efectiva y duradera en el tiempo, con tratamientos más predecibles, dirigidos y personalizados. El fin de este trabajo es conocer y describir los tipos de inmunoterapias contra el cáncer que se investigan en fase clínica en Uruguay, ampliando la mirada a la región. Para ello, se realizará una revisión bibliográfica de tipo narrativa, focalizada en Uruguay y la región.
Cancer is a pathology of great relevance worldwide, being one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality according to the World's Health Organization. With the progress of molecular biology, the deepening of the underlying mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and the role of the immune system in this process, research has focused on immunotherapies to achieve a definite cure against cancer or at least reducing the side effects of classic treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy (but not excluding their use). Based on the immune system’s ability to eradicate neoplastic cells (also known as immunosurveillance) and knowing the mechanisms through which neoplasms are able to inhibit or evade these actions, immunotherapies seek to modulate these mechanisms at different levels to generate a more effective and durable antitumor response, with more predictable, directed and personalized treatments. The purpose of this work is to know and describe the types of cancer immunotherapies that are evaluated in clinical trials in Uruguay, broadening the scope of this work to the region. For this, a narrative-type bibliographic review will be carried out, focused on Uruguay and the surrounding region.
